COUNCIL CANVAS

Kingston's Old Brewery Turns Into Riverside Oasis

©Kingston Council

It's not often that forgotten industrial spaces get a second act, but Kingston's Eagle Brewery Wharf is defying expectations with a transformation that might just redefine how we think about urban waterfronts. Like a neglected garden finally receiving a master gardener's touch, this historic riverside site is set to emerge from its chrysalis this summer as a vibrant community hub that honours its brewing past while embracing a greener future.

This five-year collaborative project between Kingston Council and Kingston First represents more than just aesthetic improvements. It's a strategic reimagining of how urban spaces can foster community connection. What makes this project standout is its community-driven approach with landscape architects working closely with local residents since 2021, to develop concepts that reflect public priorities. They include welcoming spaces, accessibility, and better connections to Kingston's town centre.

Once construction finishes this summer, visitors will discover a thoughtfully designed space featuring a play trail for children, accessible riverside seating, and increased greenery with subtle nods to the site's brewing heritage. Text references on furniture about the Fricker's Eagle Brewery and a proposed swift tower inspired by the old brewery chimney create a space that harmoniously blends history and modern needs.

This development is significant as cities worldwide grapple with reimagining under-used urban spaces. Kingston's approach offers a blueprint balancing heritage preservation with contemporary needs, that address anti-social behaviour through thoughtful design rather than just enforcement.

For local residents who've watched this space sit dormant for years, the summer will bring a new place for them to relax and reconnects them with the borough's identity and its relationship with the Thames. Eagle Brewery Wharf stands as a beacon of how thoughtful urban design can transform forgotten industrial relics into colourful community assets that honour the past while creating spaces for future generations.

LONDON BUZZ

Concrete Jungle Becomes Emerald Empire

©Time Out

When you think of London, what comes to mind? Big Ben, red buses, and lush green spaces? While most global cities race to add token parks amid concrete jungles, we have quietly transformed our city into an environmental powerhouse. London now officially ranks as the world's second-greenest city, according to a new study by Freepik. We also topped the list for most-searched green spaces globally, with an amazing 5.18 million annual searches for our lush retreats. Only Tokyo, with its 159 parks spread across a significantly larger area, managed to outrank us.

What makes this achievement remarkable is the scale of our green transformation. While the study counted 78 parks, the Greater London Authority puts the actual number closer to 3,000. Approximately 20% of London consists of public green spaces, and when viewed from above, a stunning 50% of the capital appears green and blue thanks to parks, private gardens, green roofs, and waterways.

This hasn't happened by accident. Mayor Sadiq Khan has implemented ambitious environmental initiatives, including the world's largest clean air zone ULEZ, planting over half a million trees, and setting a target for London to become a net-zero carbon city by 2030.

Next time you find yourself complaining about London's notorious grey skies, remember that beneath them lies one of the world's greenest urban landscapes. From Richmond Park's ancient oaks to Walthamstow Wetlands' thriving ecosystems, London offers countless opportunities to reconnect with nature without leaving the city. Enjoy!

BUSINESS SCENE

Blue Pubs Revive City's Soulless Financial Heart

©City of London

Have you spotted that striking blue pub on the corner of Fetter Lane yet? When the ultra-sustainable Edenica building recently opened, it wasn't the fancy material passport technology or net-zero credentials that got people talking. It was The White Swan's bold resurrection. This pub’s reopening is the first move in the Square Mile's clever £130 million Destination City strategy that's using our beloved pubs as secret weapons to breathe life back into our post-pandemic capital. For locals, it means more than just a new place for after-work drinks. It's about creating spaces where a neighbourhood actually feels alive after the office lights go out.

The City Corporation isn't just preserving these historic watering holes, they're completely transforming them. The White Swan has been strategically relocated to a prominent corner position, complete with outdoor seating and paired with a lovely new pocket park. It's all part of a masterplan to regenerate our financial district from a Monday to Friday workplace into a seven-day destination where people actually want to hang out. And honestly, who wouldn't prefer sipping a chilled Chablis in a sunny pocket park instead of rushing for the Tube at 5pm?

What's very exciting about this is how it fits into London's broader transformation. The City has always been an economic powerhouse contributing £110 billion in annual taxes, but it's finally addressing its Achilles' Heel—that reputation for being a soulless business district that empties faster than a pub at closing time on Fridays. By 2027, we'll see five new pubs strategically placed throughout the Square Mile, each designed as architectural statements with increased space and accessibility.

For the local community, the benefits extend beyond having more places to socialise. Previous developments like the Sky Garden have shown how free-to-access public spaces boost visitor numbers and support surrounding businesses. The White Swan's eye-catching blue façade signals that this neighbourhood is evolving beyond just being a place of work. With four more distinctive pubs on the horizon, our oldest social institution might just be the key to our area's vibrant future. Cheers to that!
