COUNCIL CANVAS

Honouring Local Heroes - Civic Recognition Awards

©London Daily Digital

Meet ‘Sarah’. You heard about how she turned her pandemic-era food deliveries into a thriving community kitchen that now feeds 200 seniors, every week. But here's the twist, she's never received formal recognition for transforming her neighbourhood, just like thousands of other unsung heroes across London.

Volunteering isn’t just about giving time, it’s the invisible thread that weaves communities together. Reasearch shows that volunteers are the essential ‘community glue’ creating connections that protect against social isolation and boost collective wellbeing. Every local authority in London and beyond is waiting for you to nominate your local hero so they have the chance to be recognised for their outstanding contributions.

Each Council has a Civic Award Scheme with various categories. For instance in Bexley, they have the - Young Champions (under 18), Adult Service Stars (over 18) and Outstanding Achievement (for all ages / organisations.) Councillor Baroness O’Neill of Bexley OBE says, "Bexley is home to countless individuals who dedicate their time and energy to supporting others. These Awards give us the opportunity to celebrate their incredible efforts and thank them for making our borough a better place.”

It’s time to transform these quiet acts of service into celebrated community victories. Also, because each year, every volunteer contributes specialised skills worth millions to local organisations. In addition, communities with strong volunteer networks show improved mental health outcomes and tighter social bonds.

Now’s the time to shine the light on your neighbourhood hero. Check your Council’s website for details on how to submit your nomination. Celebrated volunteers inspire 60% more community engagement activities. Sometimes the biggest changes start with the smallest thank you.

Xin Nian Kuai Le! Embrace the Year of the Wood Snake

©Tour Compass

Our streets will soon be ablaze with rich colour, sound and tradition as we celebrate the Chinese New Year, from February 8 to 10. London’s festival rivals any outside of Asia as this free cultural extravaganza transforms the heart of the city into a kaleidoscope of Chinese culture. And it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the globe.

The East meets West festivities will kick off with an awe-inspiring parade featuring over 50 performance teams and Europe's largest gathering of traditional lion and dragon dancers. They’ll weave through our famous streets from Charing Cross Road to Chinatown. And the epicentre will be Trafalgar Square, which will host dynamic stage performances, martial arts displays, tantalising and tasty street food that bring authentic Chinese flavours to the capital.

If you want to make this a family affair of cultural immersion, there’s a dedicated family zone in Leicester Square. There, you can all join in practical experiences from calligraphy to trying on traditional costumes. After this, stroll over to Shaftesbury Avenue to enjoy a showcase of rising British-Chinese talent. The cultural spree will end with a spectacular pyrotechnic display illuminating Trafalgar Square.

To deepen your connection embrace tradition by wearing red for good fortune. Plus, you can elevate your experience by eating New Year specialties and festive dumplings at one of Chinatown's authentic restaurants.

Given that 2025 is the Year of the Wood Snake, try integrating the following Chinese astrological principles into your daily life. The Snake symbolises wisdom, intuition, and transformation. And when paired with the element of Wood, it suggests growth, flexibility, and creativity. This could be an auspicious year for innovation and personal development. IKEA’s Bold Move - A New Way to Shop in the West End

©Ikea

The iconic blue and yellow is coming to London's retail heartland, but not quite as you know it. IKEA's ambitious £378 million transformation of the former Topshop flagship store promises to revolutionise how we shop for Swedish design when it opens in Spring 2025.

This isn't your typical out-of-town warehouse. So there’s no more weekend trips to Edmonton, Brent Cross or Croydon. Your next BILLY bookcase could be just a tube ride away.

Ikea’s investment into the Grade II listed building's renovation goes beyond retail. Its sustainable design with energy-efficient heat pumps, replaces gas boilers. There are four floors of office space above the store. Plus, collection points across London for larger furniture items.

If you can't wait until spring, IKEA's 'Hus of FRAKTA' pop-up next door offers a taste of what's to come. It features personalised versions of their iconic blue bag and curated homeware collections until March 2025. This bold move into Central London marks the company’s commitment to urban retail, bringing their democratic design philosophy to Oxford Street's bustling shopping district.

As Peter Jelkeby, IKEA UK's CEO puts it, "We’re bringing IKEA to the heart of London's vibrant retail scene. We’ve been overwhelmed by the interest and excitement generated around our Oxford Street opening."
