LINGUISTIC TAPESTRY - WORDS OF THE WEEK

English Word:
Malarkey
Pronunciation: /məˈlɑːki/
Definition:  Nonsense or foolishness.
Cultural Note: This playful term is often used to call out exaggerations or silly behaviour in London's everyday conversations.

Urdu Word:
نظر (Nazar)
Pronunciation:  /nəˈzər/
Definition:  The "evil eye"; a gaze or glance believed to bring harm, misfortune, or bad luck, often fueled by envy or ill intent.
Cultural Note: The concept of 'nazar' transcends linguistic and cultural boundaries, resonating with beliefs across various communities. In many traditions, it is counteracted with protective symbols like blue eye-shaped talismans, which are prominently displayed in homes, shops, and personal adornments, reflecting a universal concern with warding off negative energy.
