16 Days of Activism - London Stands Against Gender Violence

©Lorenzo Quinn
Every three days, a woman is killed by a man in the UK. This stark reality underscores the urgency of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. This global campaign started on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. And runs until December 10, Human Rights Day. Across London, boroughs and organisations are coming together to raise awareness, foster change, and provide support to survivors. All with a shared commitment to compassion and care.
Gender-based violence remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations, across the world. In the UK, it is a national crisis. The Prime Minister, Keir Starmer has pledged to halve violence against women and girls within the next decade. This ambitious goal reflects a commitment to systemic change, with targeted initiatives addressing both prevention and justice.
In Lambeth, the Council hosted the screening of, People Must Do Something. A premiere event, produced by Yellow Box Theatre. It offered a poignant exploration of domestic violence within Christian communities. This included the complex challenges faced by Christian women who struggle to reconcile their faith with harm at home. The documentary underscored the urgent need for refuge and understanding. Alarmingly, 97% of young women aged between 18 - 24, report sexual harassment. While other women often feel silenced.
The screening emphasised that 1 in 4 churchgoers experience domestic violence. Yet only 1 in 7 believe their church can effectively help them. By showcasing these realities, Yellow Box Theatre encourage churches to take responsibility and offer support, empowering women to disclose their experiences. And, aiding their recovery through understanding and safeguarding.
The 16 Days of Activism is about more than raising awareness, it’s about building communities rooted in safety, empathy, and solidarity. The heart images in this week’s newsletter, remind us that love and care are at the core of this campaign. Attend local events like art exhibitions or workshops to connect with others who share your commitment to change. Volunteer with grassroots organisations or participate in bystander training programmes that empower you to act in meaningful ways.
Connection is key, not just for creating awareness but for fostering networks of support that strengthen our communities long after these 16 days have passed. Together, we can turn awareness into action and make London a safer city for everyone. Let’s bring our hearts together—let’s get connected! 💛💜
