Barking Riverside - The Beating Heart of East London

©Barking Riverside

Barking Riverside is more than a development, it’s a lifeline for East London. The £400 million project is pumping vitality into the area with ambitious plans for 20,000 homes and a community of 50,000 residents. The aim is for the town to become self-sustaining. Barking and Dagenham Council describes it as “One of the most ambitious regeneration projects in the UK,” emphasising its potential to deliver affordable homes, vital infrastructure, and a community-first approach. But here’s the big question: can this new town truly deliver on its promise to fix London’s housing crisis while creating a vibrant, sustainable future?

The stakes are high. With over 3,500 homes completed or under construction, Barking Riverside is already making progress. The development boasts key infrastructure like a London Overground station and an Uber Boat pier, with plans for seven schools, two expansive parks and retail hubs like The District Centre and The Circus. These spaces will feature shops, cafés, and leisure facilities designed to foster economic growth and community connection.

But challenges remain. Rising interest rates have slowed housing completions in other parts of Barking and Dagenham, making Barking Riverside critical to meeting local housing targets. The council has worked to ensure that homes built through its development company, Be First, are allocated to local residents—particularly those on housing waiting lists or struggling with private rents. However, critics question whether the project can maintain affordability as demand soars. The council’s innovative governance model—a Community Interest Company (CIC) led by residents—is designed to keep the community at the heart of decision-making, but its long-term effectiveness remains to be seen.

What makes Barking Riverside stand out is its holistic approach to urban living. Beyond housing, the project emphasises sustainability with flood defences, green energy systems, and extensive walking and cycling routes. It also focuses on creating a sense of belonging through cultural hubs and green spaces that enhance quality of life. As Deputy Mayor Tom Copley notes, “Barking Riverside is an exemplary new town that is transforming East London with state-of-the-art new homes, community facilities, transport links, and green spaces.”

Ultimately, Barking Riverside represents more than just a housing project—it’s a bold experiment in how cities can grow smarter and fairer. Like arteries coursing through the city’s body, these enhancements ensure Barking Riverside will be a dynamic economic engine. One that promises to redefine East London’s landscape for generations to come.

©Diego Morales

Elephant and Castle is buzzing with the opening of the Latin American Elephant Passage Market in Walworth. Open every Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm, this colourful market offers a new home for Latin American businesses displaced after the closure of the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre in 2020. With a variety of stalls, delicious food, and handmade crafts, the market is a celebration of culture, resilience, and community.

The market launched with a Multicolour Carnival, featuring everything from Colombian coffee to tacos and artisanal jewelry. Jenn Mejia, founder of Latina Rising, shared her excitement, “Seeing this space come to life felt like a dream turned reality. A place where our community's talent, resilience, and hustle get a spotlight.” Visitors are already flocking to enjoy authentic Latin American flavours while supporting local entrepreneurs who have worked tirelessly to reclaim their presence in the area.

This initiative reflects years of campaigning by the Latin American community to preserve their cultural footprint in Elephant and Castle amid rising rents and gentrification. The market provides an affordable platform for small businesses to thrive again. Also, it highlights the vital role Latin American entrepreneurs play in shaping the area’s identity. It’s not just a marketplace. It’s a cultural hub for connection and creativity.

So if you’re on the hunt for authentic tacos or want to browse handcrafted goods with a story behind them, the market offers something special for everyone.
