Merton Turns 60 - A Diamond Celebration

©Merton Council

Like a patchwork quilt stitched together with care and history, the London Borough of Merton is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Since its formation in 1965, when Mitcham, Morden, Wimbledon, and Merton joined to create one vibrant community, the borough has grown into a dynamic hub of culture, heritage, and innovation. Now, in 2025, it’s time to celebrate six decades of progress with We Are Merton at 60—a series of events that highlight the borough’s unique identity and the people who make it shine.

Merton’s story is one of resilience and evolution. From its Roman roads and medieval priory to its industrial revolution innovations and modern cultural landmarks like Wimbledon’s All England Lawn Tennis Club, Merton has played a vital role in shaping London’s history. This diamond anniversary isn’t just about looking back, it’s about celebrating the threads that connect its past to its present and future. The festivities reflect this journey, with events that bring communities together while honouring the borough’s rich heritage.

Each of Merton’s key areas—Mitcham, Morden, Wimbledon, Raynes Park, Colliers Wood, Pollards Hill, and South Wimbledon, will host community created celebrations filled with music, food, and activities. Including a nod to Mitcham’s historic lavender fields. These blooms will brighten public spaces throughout the year. And on Monday, May 5, Morden Park will transform into a festival ground featuring acts like Artful Dodger, Norman Jay, Jah Wobble, and Abba Forever. There will be an abundance of food stalls, family-friendly activities, and a celebration of local talent.

Just as a quilt grows more intricate with each stitch, so too has Merton evolved over the past 60 years. From being named “Best Achieving Council” in 2013 to fostering vibrant community projects today, Merton continues to balance honouring its history with building a brighter future. This anniversary celebrates not just what the borough has achieved but also what lies ahead for its residents and communities.

Whether you’re a lifelong resident or new to the area, We Are Merton at 60 is your chance to celebrate what makes this borough extraordinary. From its historic roots to its modern vibrancy, this milestone reminds us that community is at the heart of everything. By joining in you’ll be part of a story that continues to grow richer with every passing year. Mark your calendars for May 5 and don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime celebration!

Wales Week - Celebrating Welsh Culture in London

©Wales Week London

From now until March 3 2025, Welsh culture will be spreading its charm through our city, as we embrace the return of Wales Week London. This annual festival celebrates all things Welsh, from music and art to food and history, culminating in the grand celebration of St. David’s Day on March 1. If you’re Welsh by birth or simply a fan of its rich heritage, Wales Week offers a unique opportunity to connect with the heart and soul of Cymru without leaving the capital.

The festival boasts an exciting lineup of events, including concerts, art exhibitions, talks, and food tastings that showcase the best of Welsh talent and traditions. Highlights include performances by Welsh musicians, literary readings featuring contemporary authors, and even opportunities to try iconic dishes like Welsh cakes, cawl, and Bara Brith. St. David’s Day itself is a centrepiece of the festivities, honouring Wales’s patron Saint with parades, traditional costumes, and daffodils ,a symbol of national pride. St. David’s Day both honours a saint and celebrates the enduring spirit of Wales through its music, food, and community spirit.

What makes Wales Week so special is its ability to bring a slice of Wales to London. From its historic roots, St. David was a 6th-century preacher known for his miracles and discipline, to modern celebrations of Welsh creativity. This festival bridges the past and present. There’s something for everyone, like an evening of Welsh poetry or a lively concert celebrating contemporary artists inspired by their homeland. It’s a chance to experience the warmth and vibrancy of Welsh culture in venues across London.

If you want to indulge in traditional Welsh cuisine or attend a live performance, Wales Week promises a cultural journey that will leave you inspired. And, maybe even humming along to Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau - Land of My Fathers.

Ed Sheeran’s Foundation - Nurturing Global Superstars

©Hammersmith Today

Ed Sheeran isn’t just a global music icon, he’s a passionate advocate for the next generation of musicians. Through his newly launched Ed Sheeran Foundation, he’s funding transformative music education programmes across the UK, including London’s own Rhythm Studio Foundation. This initiative is already inspiring young talent in some of the city’s most disadvantaged areas.

Music education has long been underfunded, leaving many children without access to instruments, tuition, or performance opportunities. The Foundation is changing that narrative by supporting grassroots organisations like The Rhythm Studio Foundation, which runs a ten-week Primary Schools Workshop Programme. It engages 8 – 11 year olds in state schools across West London. The aim is to empower them to create and perform music while introducing potential career pathways in the industry.

Over the next three years, the funding will provide music education to 1,800 children in some of London’s most deprived areas. They’ll have access to industry-standard studios, professional teaching, and live performance opportunities. Beyond the numbers lies the powerful message that music can transform lives. Ed himself credits music education with shaping his journey from a small town boy to a global superstar. By investing in young talent today, he’s giving back and paving the way for future stars who could one day grace the BRIT stage or headline Glastonbury.

Ed Sheeran’s commitment to nurturing creativity is a game changer for young people in London. Thanks to his Foundation, thousands of children will have the chance to discover their potential and pursue their dreams. As one student put it after meeting him: “It means so much to know someone like Ed believes in us.” To learn more about this inspiring initiative, visit The Rhythm Studio Foundation. You never know, the next big name in British music might just be starting their journey right here in London!
