Step into the rhythm of history at Black Sound London, a groundbreaking exhibition at the Barbican Music Library. It amplifies the voices, beats and stories of Black British music. This isn’t just a look back in time, it’s a celebration of how underground movements reshaped the sound of a nation.

From the arrival of the Southern Syncopated Orchestra in 1919 to the seismic energy of grime and drill today, this free exhibition traces the unstoppable rise of Black British music. Expect to see how pirate radio, niche record shops and community-driven creativity catapulted legends like Lord Kitchener, Eddy Grant, Jazzie B, Ms Dynamite and Dizzee Rascal, onto the main stage.

Curated by renowned music historian Lloyd Bradley and designer Scott Leonard, Black Sound London hands the mic back to the people who lived it. There are two special Heritage Collection Days that invite you to share personal stories. Think memories of sweaty basement parties, treasured vinyl collections, or first encounters with a now-iconic artist. You can even have your memorabilia 3D scanned, ensuring that these moments are preserved for future generations.

As part of the City of London Corporation’s Destination City initiative, this exhibition is more than nostalgia. It’s a powerful reminder that Black British music isn’t just about sound. It’s about resilience, rebellion and rewriting the rules. Black Sound London is free to visit at the Barbican Music Library until July 19.
